Lost at Sea
Mixed media on canvas

Collaborating artistically with Syrian and Iraqi refugees in UK, Germany and Jordan, Gadsden captures the physical, psychological and visceral toll of escaping one’s homeland. Lost at Sea is a collaboration with a mother and her three children who survived after being swept into the water when the boat in which they were fleeing capsized in the Mediterranean Sea. The challenges and hopes that coexist in the painting represent the strength in the human spirit.
Rachel Gadsden is a UK-based visual artist and performance artist who is exhibited internationally, and works across the mainstream and disability art sectors. She holds a BA and an MA in Fine Art, and in 2016 she was awarded an Honorary Doctorate by London South Bank University.
